Emily: Week of 2/23
Your Name: Emily Nuthall
Your Partners Names: Kathleen and Chelsea
1. Briefly describe what you PERSONALLY accomplished this week:
This week I began to work on the creation of the videos for our website. On Monday and Tuesday I continued work on the writing/revising of the voice over scripts, as well as doing searches for pictures that I believed would go well with the voiceovers. I also utilized my time at home on these nights to access YouTube in order to find videos for the videos. On Wednesday I tried to start work on making the actual videos, but I found that my knowledge of the movie making programs on the school computers was not as
good as I thought it was. So, I decided to continue my work (the next day) on my MacBook, so I could use iMovie (which I know very well). After I made this decision on Wednesday I continued to plan out wetland visit for Sunday! I emailed a representative at the San Elijo Lagoon and learned about the trail that goes around the Lagoon. On Thursday I brought my computer to school, and began work in iMovie. This work continued over to Friday. I plan to have my videos uploaded to our website by the week of March 13th.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished this week:
This week Chelsea finished her article on the killer algae! It is now uploaded to our wonderful website (which is complete!). Kathleen began more in depth research about our chemistry aspect, and was later joined in this process by Chelsea. Kathleen has also completed a rough draft of the outline for our PowerPoint Presentation.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other this week:
This week has been no different from the rest. We were able to work individually in order to get as much work done as possible. Because of this we are still ahead of schedule.

Week: February 23-27, 2009
1. Briefly describe what you PERSONALLY accomplished this week:
This week I finished the “killer” algae article and then began working on more articles. I started two new ones, one about the pollution of wetlands, and the other one about land development in critical habitats. I remembered that near my house there was a school set to be built on a plot of land but then they realized that there were vernal pools with fairy shrimp (an endangered species in San Diego) living in the pools. The school hasn’t been built because it was deemed a critical habitat. All throughout
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished this week:
This week Emily finalized voice over scripts for the videos and she also started making the videos. During our work time earlier this week she started to work with Premiere and Movie Maker and found that she preferred iMovie on her computer. While at home she recorded the voice over for the videos. She also worked on finding pictures and videos and then began to make the movies.
This week Kathleen researched soil chemistry, more specifically microorganisms. She has created pages of notes about microorganisms, what they do, and how they work. She found out a lot of the science concepts and how microbes help wetlands. This week Kathleen also worked on the rough draft of our outline for our science presentation and today she finished the outline.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other this week?
This week we worked independently to accomplish the most amount of work. This technique has been working for us because we are able to complete a lot of work and be slightly ahead of our schedule. We sit at the same table so that we can be close to each other and if we need to ask questions or we just want to check in it is easy. By sitting close we can help each other out as needed and complete our work.

February 18-22, 2009
This week was filled with much work and not only I but my entire group was productive. On Wednesday, I worked on uploading the different animal profiles onto the website. I also looked into how to use 'targeting link' in terms of iframe as well as the different html codes that go into it for better formatting in the section of the website. On Thursday, I finished creating the html book template for the animal and plant glossaries. I finished uploading all of the animal profiles and target link them to each corresponding link. Below is an image of the finished animal profile glossary book.

On Friday, I was actually absent for over an hour of work time due to a fieldtrip for ASB, so I wasn't able to accomplish all that I wanted that day. However, I did begin uploading the plant prfofiles. I just utilized the same template as the animal profiles page and uploaded the information for plants. Over the weekend I continued looking into soil chemistry and although I visited many websites I still feel as though I came out short. However, I did take notes on the information that seemed important and relevant to our topic.
2. What did your TEAMMATE(S) accomplish this week:
Throughout this week Emily mainly worked on various things and accomplised numerous things as well. On Wednesday, Emily created a list of the videos she is going to create for our website and referred back to the older list that she created beforehand and decided which ones she is really going to make. Once finished, she began to create narrative scripts for videos regarding the different types of wetlands and conducted any additional research to help her write. Thursday, Emily continued to write the scripts for the video and also complied more research and the different images she is going to use for the video. On Friday, she finished writing the narrative scripts for the different types of wetlands, but continued her search for images and other elements for the video such as music.
Chelsea, being the team player that she is accomplished her goals for this week. On Wednesday, she worked on an article specializing on the 'Killer Algae', a plant found in wetlands and its connection to conservation. She also continued her research about the conservation of wetlands and began to write outlines of the different articles she is going to write for that section. By Thursday, she accomplished writing the Killer Algae article and researched how different organizations/agencies contribute to the conservation of wetlands. Friday was very similar, Chelsea continued to research within those means and began to write one of her conservation artciles.
3. How did you and your partner(s) ASSIST each other:
Like most of the days we've worked together, we've mainly worked independently. However in that same sense by working and accomplishing our own goals we are accomplishing the goals of our whole group. By doing this we are working together to continue our fight for wetlands awareness and progress in our goal to understand what it means to go green.

This week I finalized the plant profiles and gave them to Kathleen so that she could start uploading them to the website. I also started researching the conservation of wetlands and writing the article about “killer” algae that is taking over the coasts of southern California. I worked on researching about conservation strategies and organizations and agencies that specialize in the conservation of wetlands. On Friday Emily Atkinson came to our class and spoke about MSCP, the Multiple Species Conservation Program, which is one of the agencies that I researched about. That presentation helped me understand MSCP a lot more. I also started to write more articles that will be on the website.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished this week:
This week Emily finalized the animal profiles and sent them to Kathleen to begin uploading them to the website. After she finished the animal profiles she began to work on articles about the different types of wetlands. This week Emily also worked on writing the voice over scripts for the movies informational videos as well as finding pictures for the videos.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other this week?
Through out this whole week we worked independently to accomplish the most amount of work. So far, this technique has been working in our favor and we are ahead of our projected schedule. If we continue at this rate we will finish our project ahead of time and be able to tweak it as needed.

Emily: Week Of Feb. 16th, 2009
This week, after finalizing the animal profiles and completing the articles about the different types of wetlands, I began to compile information for the informational videos that will eventually go up on our website. This included choosing what videos to make, writing scripts for the voice-overs, and finding pictures to accompany the voice overs. I was able to complete rough drafts for the voice overs for videos on what are wetlands, swamps, marshes, bogs, and fens. I also began finding pictures for each video.

Website UPLOADING!
During the past weekend I finished our final professional website layout (thank goodness). I also managed to created a different template, however there was a consensus from my group mates that we should go with the template that we have now. Today I gathered both the animal profiles and general wetland information articles from Emily and began uploading them to the website. So far I have already uploaded all the wetland profiles, including the types of wetlands, and I started to import the different animal profiles. Along with this I had to find corresponding images for the wetland articles.
Here's an image of our website with the already uploaded information!

Once I got home from school, I began to conduct research on the soil chemistry of wetlands. I looked into the different websites that Emily had gathered so that I too can be versed in the ways of soil chemistry.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Chelsea began to really delve into her research about the conservation of wetlands. She slightly began it last week, but today she went deeper into it looking into the various ways people can contribute to conserving wetlands along with preserving them.
Emily finalized both the animal profiles and wetland articles, looking over them to see if any corrections need to be made. Since she is finished with that, she continued her research of soil chemistry. She discovered about the role of pH within the soil of wetlands and its over-arching effect on the plant/animal life within the area.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partners ASSISTED each other today:
We aided in each other's process by working individually. In doing this we progress in our project, and we can make time for further work that requires us to work together in a more traditional sense. Today specifically, Emily helped me in finding useful websites for looking into soil chemistry.

1. Briefly describe what you PERSONALLY accomplished today:
Today was my first day back to school. I met up with my group members and told them what I have been working on. I worked on researching for the other articles. One of the articles I’m going to write is about “killer” algae. This type of algae is an invasive species that originated in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. Somehow (I’m still not completely sure) the “killer” algae started to grow of the coast of southern California. It is important that people know about this algae because once it starts growing it takes over killing everything. If people see what they think is the “killer” algae then they are advised to take a sample and contact someone like the San Diego Regional Water Quality Board.
Emily began to research about soil chemistry and its role in the wetlands. While Emily was researching, she found out that different wetland plants need a certain pH level in order to grow properly. Kathleen worked on our final website. So far, it looks really good and it is very apparent that Kathleen spent a lot of time learning how to use different tools to make the template.
Today we assisted each other by working individually. We divided the work up so that we could each accomplish a small portion of the bigger project.

Website Layout-ing: New Templates
Today I utilized my work time at school by creating different template designs for our final website. Although I like the design I created yesterday, I thought it would be best to fully get out all of my different template ideas and see which one seems to be the best choice. Once again I used Photoshop as my main tool along with the various brushes that proved to be very useful in my creations. I started to create two different templates today, both however are still in the process of being designed. For one of the alternative templates I decided to implement a more simpler design, by just having the design element of the grass on the bottom, with a plane white background, no colored tables, and an iframe scroll bar. Below is a short example of what I started going for:
I also created the background image for the other template that I started today which can be seen here:
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Emily finished up writing about the different types of wetland habitats and began looking into the chemistry component behind wetlands. She conducted research about the type of soil chemistry within the different types of wetlands. Emily explained to the group how what she's researching is very relative to what we're learning in chemistry now. It turns out, different plants in wetlands need the soil to be a certain type of "pH" in order to survive, which is associated with acids and bases.
Chelsea was back at school today. (Yay!) She continued to work on her plant profiles, and I believe she is almost done. In addition, she looked into different ideas about what articles she will write next. It seems like she will most likely begin writing about the conservation of wetlands.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
We aided one another by inputting a lot of effort into the individual work that we are doing, and by doing this we are able to move forward as a group. Specifically today, Emily shared her knowledge with us, and we all discussed with one another our plans for the day.

Website Layout-ing; A New Phase and Look
My main goal of today was to really dive into creating the design template for our new website. Although our example website was good looking, I used images that were not mine in the template. So, I utilized a series of Photoshop brushes to create the design elements within the template. I actually had to download free types of brushes in order to create the right outlook. I based the layout on the previous, keeping all the same ideas for various elements (the navigation bar, text box, color scheme).
Below is the background image that I created for the website which is inspired by a photo of a wetland that I used in the previous layout.
Below is the actual template which include the navigation bar, text boxes, tables, as well as the grass design on the bottom.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Today Emily continued working on writing the articles for the different types of wetlands and is almost finished with them. She learned extensively about the different wetland habitats including certain characteristics, differences, and significance of each.
Chelsea was not at school today, however Emily and I received an email from her in the late afternoon informing us that she is finishing up the plant profiles.
Prior to meeting with Andrew for the check-in, Emily and I created a list of our accomplishments so far, what we plan to accomplish as a group next week, and which member is responsible for which task.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
During the meeting Emily and I collaborated with one another about how we've been doing so far in the project, and what our future goals are. We both equally talked with Andrew, about our group work and the individual jobs that we do. We fed off what each other was saying and our ideas progressed throughout the meeting.
Once again, by working individually on our own assignments, we are able to move forward with the project and even be somewhat ahead of schedule.

Website Layout-ing: Tutorials, Ap-Div Frustration, and a New Look
Today I once again worked on our website. Compared to my early successes with making the website last week, this week hasn't been as triumphant. However, I was still able to accomplish a number of things. At school I continued to look up different options for creating a scroll bar within a table, or inserting an AP div into a table so that the text will be wrapped around it. The main problem and frustration with Ap-Divs is that the actual text box doesn't go over the table it is within, and the location of it changes depending on the resolution of a computer. I went on a massive internet tutorial search to see how to fix this problem, testing out different html codes, expanding my knowledge of code, and despite help from Emily, I was not able to find a solution. Luckily, at home I continued to look into the problem and got aid from my brother. From his own personal tutorial, I learned how to create an "iframe" using html coding and utilizing the different components of it.
Here is a sample of the section of the website that contains an iframe:
It may look simple, but getting to this point was quite complicated. Also, I continued to work on the preliminary steps to creating our more professional website. Once I got home I was able to download different types of brushes to use for the design of the website, and I experimented with them a little.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Once again, Emily helped me with any of the complications in the website. Aside from that, she started to write a new set of articles for our website. She began to research and write about the different types of wetlands there are. This is a subject Emily is well versed in and she previously took notes on it so she was able to write a substantial amount.
Chelsea was home sick was again, and although I have not yet been in communication with her today I am quite sure that she is working on creating plant profiles and looking up images. If she were to be done with that today, her next step would be to start researching other articles to write to upload into our website.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other:
Emily and I definitely assisted one another by working aspects of the website together. She would look at different tutorials with me, conjure up suggestions, and provide opinions about the aesthetics of the website.
Although chelsea was not physically with us, she still aided our group move forward through her continuation of working on plant profiles.

Website Layout-ing: Dreamweaver Familiarization
Today I also worked on looking for new images and a slightly different design for our more improved website.
Chelsea was unfortunately sick once again. Luckily, she responded to my email from yesterday informing me that she was sick and couldn't work yesterday. However, she was a bit better today to continue conducting research on the different plants in wetlands.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partners ASSISTED each other today:
Emily and I definitely had some teamwork going for us today. Once she was finished doing animal profiles, she shared with me some of her knowledge of Dreamweaver. From some of the actions she did I was able to build from that and we figured out new and different ways in which to improve the website.

Website Lay-outing, Network Meltdown
Today wasn't as productive as any of the groups hoped today, because for over an hour the network was down. However, my group members and I were still able to progress in our project and we are still ahead of schedule in terms of our work load. My main focus of the day was to explore more into Dreamweaver and tweaking our website. Today I discovered numerous functions within the program, such as the different applications of "spry". I have not implemented any spry elements into our website, but its various functions will prove useful to the future. Another interesting application that I learned to appy today was how to insert a scroll bar within a template.
As I explained in previous work logs, the website I was working on was mainly a sample website where I can figure out the inner workings of the program, then create a more professional website. I was hoping to start recreating the new website and look into different tutorials; however, due to lack of internet access I was not able to begin these endeavors.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Today Emily continued what she was doing all of last week, which was finding information and creating profiles for various animals that reside in wetlands. She was almost finished with her list when suddenly the network went down. However, she will be finished with the profiles tomorrow and she will begin a new portion of the project.
Chelsea unfortunately wasn't present today. Emily and I didn't receive an email from her, so she may be very sick and not able to dedicate herself to work.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
Today was mainly filled with frustration because of the fact that we couldn't do as much work as we wanted to. But through our frustration, Emily and I were able to talk intelligently with one another and ease each other's frustration. For example I became upset because of a small detail of our web layout on Dreamweaver, but Emily reassured me that it was alright and I was able to move on and work on other things.

Website Layout-ing: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and a Nav. Bar!
My journey into creating our website has reached new heights today. I finished making any adjustments to the Photoshop of our layout, then figured out how to slice the images so that I can import them into Adobe Dreamweaver. One of my main accomplishments of the day was creating the navigation bar of our site, which is even better than what I pictured it to be when I drew out the design. A really important thing that I learned today, thanks to spencer (no thanks to internet tutorials...) was how to layer text on top of an image. This is definitely something that I've wanted to know for a while, and not only will I be able to utilize it for our website, but I will also use it for future web design projects. My process in creating our website has so far taught me quite a few things that I didn't know beforehand, and further developed my skills in graphic design.
Here is a sample of our website. Keep in mind that this is just a sample page, not our actual website. Once I figure out the mechanics of everything, I will recreate our website with a more updated design.

2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Emily is pretty far into her research of animals, and has so far already created 15 profiles. All throughout today she showed me the different types of animals she was studying and telling me a brief description about them. An interesting animal that she looked into was the tapir, which is curiously related to the rhino and horse. Unfortunately Chelsea was out sick today, however being the good team player that she is, she emailed both Emily and how she is going to continue work from home. She described that she was going to continue researching the numerous plant species in wetlands.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
Our independent work has allowed our group to progress smoothly in our project. We are definitely ahead of schedule by at least a couple of days. By working on our own individual portions of the project we are not only helping one another by sharing the information we learned but we also share the different skills we are gaining through the project. For example, Emily was wondering how I was creating the website and I was able to explain the different methods I used, which could prove to be helpful for her.

Website Layout-ing and Book Design
I once again continued my journey into website design. In the beginning of the day I mainly tried to look at different tutorials of different the different methods I could use to create the website. I earlier looked into primarily using Photoshop and then slicing up the images and putting them into Dreamweaver. Now I am considering getting into CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), because CSS template typically have a cleaner, more professional outlook. So I looked into beginner CSS tutorials and got a brief overview on how I could go about doing it.
My main focus of the day however was creating a book template. Inside the book template we are going to put all the plant and animal profiles. I looked into a tutorial and utilized Photoshop to accomplish this. Here is a sample of the template I made.

2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Emily and Chelsea both continued researching and writing articles on the different plant and animal species. Chelsea I believe figured out the format in which she will write the articles, and Emily had already implemented a format. Emily found most of her information on animals from the San Diego Zoo website, which has extensive information about animals in wetlands. Emily believed that through her research it is helping her with her volunteering at zoo-core.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
Once again, by working independently we are inadvertently helping each other. By doing our own individual parts of the project we are helping the group move forward to accomplish more things. Also, there were a few times of the day where I asked my group members their thoughts on the book layout, and their opinions were quite helpful.

Chelsea did something very similar, but instead focused on the numerous plants found in wetlands. She looked into all the different types of grass and took quite a few notes on them.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today:
Just like past days, we aided each other in the direction we all wanted to go. I help suggest to Chelsea and Emily what types of things they might want to research and they helped me in turn by providing feedback on the website design that I was working on. Emily even suggested that i used a pelican bird as a part of the rollover feature of the buttons.

1. Briefly describe what you PERSONALLY accomplished today:
Today my group and I started to work on our project. I worked on the articles that will go on our website. I'm going to be writing articles about the native plants that are in San Diego's wetlands. I found a that there are a lot of plants in the wetlands and they all have a purpose. I was reading about Cat Tails and I learned that they can be used to produce ethanol.
2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Kathleen began making the website template on the computer. She has figured out which fonts we will be using and made the templates for the other pages. Emily worked on articles like I did except she is going to write about the native animals in San Diego's wetlands. She found a lot of different animals that are here in San Diego and found that her experience with Zoo Corps helped a lot when she was researching.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today?
My group and I assisted each other by creating a "To Do" list at the beginning of class. We divided the work so that everybody had a job and if we didn't know what to do we could just look on the paper that we wrote it out on.

Website Layout-ing [on Paper], Proposal Revisions, Research
Just like Friday I worked on layout-ing our to be created website. Last Friday I mainly worked on the logistics and organization of the website, like the number of pages, the content on each of the pages, the different links each page contains, etc. However today, I worked on mapping out the actual design and aesthetic look of the website. During the weekend I had different ideas of what the website should look like, in terms of different design elements, placing, etc. and drew out rough sketches of what each would look like. At the end of the weekend I chose which one would be best suited for our project and today I drew it out in more detail. Below is the sketch of our website that I drew out:
Below is a rough outline of one of the more interesting elements that we will incorporate in the website. For our Animals/Plants informational section, I planned to make it out to look like a book, where the left hand page will be a glossary of species while the right hand page will have information about the specific animal/plant the view chose.
One of the other things that I did today was help out my other group member start revising our proposal. 2. Briefly describe what your TEAMMATE(S) accomplished today:
Like Friday's worktime, we once again went our separate ways into independent study, but every so often we checked up on each other's work. Today, Emily began to edit and revise our proposal by adding information about which videos she plans to put into our website. Her main point of research today was to look more into the chemistry component of our project and she was quite successful in her findings. After talking with Andrew, Emily was able to get a better idea of what type of environmental chemistry we want to go into. We are going to go into the chemistry of soil, and an interesting fact that Emily found was the filtering-power of soil.Chelsea continued a lot of her work that she started on Friday, which was modifying our model stormwater wetland, looking up professional contacts, and deciding which articles to put unto our website. Today she discovered a good way to change our wetland design by incorporating an actual filter into the model.
3. Briefly describe how you and your partner(s) ASSISTED each other today?
We once again divided the work amongst ourselves by creating a 'To-Do' list for the day, which will become routine for us. Although we somewhat worked independently we relied on each other for information and opinion. For example I asked my group mates their thoughts on the website design, and they critiqued it to help me change different elements. In addition Emily and Chelsea both shared their finding with the rest of the group, along with the different websites that they utilized.
